Privacy Policy
How we collect, use, and protect your information.

LU English ("we," "our," "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, where we store it, and your choices.
1. Information we collect
Account info: name, email, password, contact details.
Payment info: handled by Stripe (including PayPal) and GlobePay for China. We do not store card numbers.
Lesson recordings: all live lessons are recorded. See Section 3 for full details on how recordings are used, stored, and shared.
Messages and notifications: booking confirmations, reminders, recording links, lesson reports.
Chat messages: text messages, photos, and files sent between students and teachers through the app.
Technical data: device, browser, OS, IP address, connection quality (used to deliver lessons and troubleshoot issues).
Cookies and analytics: essential cookies plus Google Analytics for usage statistics. See Section 6.
2. How we use your information
We use your information to provide and manage lessons, process payments and credits, share lesson recordings and reports, maintain platform safety (especially for minors), send operational notifications (reminders, invoices, updates), improve lesson quality and platform performance, and comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information.
3. Lesson recordings
All lessons are recorded for the following purposes:
Safety and safeguarding: recordings protect both students and teachers. This is especially important for lessons involving minors.
Quality and review: students receive a link to their recording after each lesson so they can review what was covered. Teachers use recordings to prepare follow-up sessions.
Marketing and testimonials: with your consent, short clips from recordings may be used for marketing purposes (website, social media, promotional materials). All clips are anonymized — faces are hidden or blurred, and no full names are used without explicit written permission. You can opt out of marketing use at any time by emailing us, and any existing clips will be removed within 14 days.
Retention: lesson recordings are automatically deleted after 7 days unless a student or parent requests earlier deletion. Clips approved for marketing use are retained separately under the terms of the consent given.
Opt-out: if you do not want your recordings used for marketing, email sean@luenglish.com at any time. Opting out does not affect the safety and review recordings, which are retained for the standard period regardless.

5. Data location
Our application is hosted on Vercel (US/EU edge network). Student and lesson data is stored with Supabase. Voov recordings for students in China are stored temporarily on Tencent Cloud (Hong Kong region). By using our service, you agree that your information may be processed in these locations.
6. Cookies and tracking
We use essential cookies for core site functions. With your consent, we use Google Analytics to understand how people use the site and Google Ads conversion tracking for advertising. You can manage cookies through the consent banner or your browser settings. Some features may not work if you disable essential cookies.
7. Third-party providers
We share only what is needed to run the service:
Payment processing: Stripe (including PayPal), GlobePay (for China).
Classroom and video: Daily.co (live video classroom and lesson recordings), Voov (for students in China).
Chat messaging: Tencent Cloud IM (in-app messaging between students and teachers).
Database: Supabase (student accounts, bookings, lesson data).
Transcription and AI: AssemblyAI (lesson transcription for parent reports), Anthropic (AI-generated lesson reports sent to parents).
Email: Resend (transactional emails), MailerLite (marketing emails, opt-in only).
Teachers: access student names and lesson details to deliver lessons.
We do not allow third parties to use your data for their own marketing.
8. Children's privacy
Minimum age to register: 13. Students under 13 are enrolled by a parent or guardian.
Ages 13 to 15: require parental or guardian consent. Payment by a legal adult serves as the consent mechanism.
All lessons involving minors are recorded for safeguarding purposes. Parents can request access to or deletion of their child's data at any time.
9. Marketing emails
If you opt in, we may send occasional product updates or promotions via MailerLite. You can unsubscribe anytime via the link in the email. Operational emails (receipts, reminders, lesson reports, recording links) will continue regardless, as they are needed to run the service.
10. Data security
We use encryption, access controls, and secure hosting to protect your information. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text. No system is perfect, but we take reasonable steps to keep data safe.
11. Data breach response
If we become aware of unauthorized access to personal data, we will act quickly to contain the issue, assess impact, and notify affected users when required by law.
12. Your choices
Update your profile and preferences in your dashboard.
Opt out of marketing recording use by emailing us.
Unsubscribe from marketing emails via the link in any email.
Request account closure or data deletion by emailing us.
Manage cookies through the consent banner or browser settings.
13. Business transfers
If LU English is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred to the new owner, who will continue to handle it under this policy.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our service evolves. If we make significant changes, we will notify you by email or website banner.
